Effective Winter Wheel Cleaning and Maintenance

Remove Salt, Brake Dust & Protect Your Wheels

Winter is extremely tough on wheels. Road salt, gritty traffic film, heavy brake dust and iron fallout build up quickly, and if left too long can stain finishes and accelerate corrosion.

This guide walks you through an effective winter wheel cleaning routine that safely cleans, decontaminates and protects wheels and tyres, making future maintenance washes much more straight forward.

Why Winter Wheel Cleaning Is Important

In winter, wheels face a constant mix of salt spray, brake dust and embedded iron contamination. Moisture and grit can accelerate lacquer failure, staining and pitting, especially on delicate finishes. A proper routine includes four stages:

  1. Pre-Wash to remove the worst traffic film and grime.
  2. Main Wash to physically clean the wheel.
  3. Decontaminate to dissolve iron fallout and brake dust.
  4. Protect to reduce future build-up and make washing easier.

Step 1: Pre-Wash to Loosen Salt & Winter Grime

Product: Squid Ink Citrus

Citrus pre wash breaking down winter grime on alloy wheel

Start with a pre-wash to break down oily traffic film and salty grime before you touch the wheel. This reduces the risk of swirls and scratches during contact washing.

  • Apply diluted Squid Ink Citrus to wheels and tyres.
  • Allow to dwell for up to 5 minutes (do not let it dry).
  • Scrub tyres well with our Tyre-Brush until Citrus runs clean.
  • Rinse thoroughly with a pressure washer

Tip: Work one axle at a time in cold conditions so products don’t dry on the surface. Scrubbing your tyres at this stage is important, tyre dressings will bond far better to clean tyres.

Step 2: Main Wash for a Safe Contact Clean

Product: Squid Ink Blue Lagoon

Wheel shampoo cleaning alloy wheel spokes and barrels

After the pre-wash, use our dedicated pH neutral wheel cleaner to clean faces, barrels and tight areas around nuts and calipers.

Blue Lagoon can be used as a shampoo in a bucket, diluted in a trigger bottle, or in an IK Foam Pro style foam sprayer.

  • Apply Blue Lagoon using a wheel brush, barrel brush or wash mitt.
  • Agitate gently: spokes, inner barrels, behind spokes and around wheel nuts.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water.

This step removes the remaining grime and prepares the surface for decontamination and protection.

Step 3: Iron Decontamination

Product: Squid Ink Ferrous Xtract

Brake dust contains metallic particles that embed into wheel finishes. Over time, iron fallout oxidises and causes stubborn staining, especially when mixed with road salt. An iron remover targets sharp embedded contamination that normal cleaning products won't touch.

  • Apply Ferrous Xtract to wheels.
  • Allow it to react (you’ll see a colour change as it works).
  • Light agitation if needed in heavy areas.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Important: Never allow iron remover to dry on the wheel.

Step 4: Hydrophobic Ceramic Wheel Protection

Product: Squid Ink Rim-Guard

Ceramic wheel sealant protecting alloy wheel from winter grime

Protection is the key to easier winter maintenance. A hydrophobic ceramic wheel sealant helps repel water, reduces brake dust bonding and makes salt film easier to rinse away.

  • Ensure wheels are clean and dry.
  • Apply Rim-Guard evenly with a microfibre applicator.
  • Allow to cure for a couple of minutes and buff off with a Weever microfibre cloth.

With wheels protected, you’ll find winter grime is much easier to remove during future routine washes.

Tip: If applied correctly Rim-Guard will last around 4 months. To prolong further, Wet-Seal spray and rinse can be used on future regular washes.

Step 5: SiO2 Hydrophobic Tyre Dressing

Product: Squid Ink Tyre-Guard

Tyres take a hammering in winter too. A hydrophobic tyre dressing helps repel water and road grime while leaving a clean, fresh finish that lasts. This makes cleaning in future a lot easier.

  • Apply Tyre-Guard to clean, dry tyres.
  • Spread evenly and work into tyre wall, our foam or microfibre applicators work best.
  • Allow to cure naturally before driving

Optional Maintenance: Spray & Rinse Protection Top-Up

Product: Squid Ink Wet-Seal

Applying spray sealant to wet alloy wheel during wash

For quick winter maintenance, a spray-and-rinse top-up is ideal. Wet-Seal boosts hydrophobic behaviour and helps keep protection performing between deeper cleans.

  • After washing, while wheels are still wet, spritz Wet-Seal onto the wheel.
  • Rinse immediately.
  • Dry as normal.

Use Wet-Seal during regular washes to maintain protection and keep wheels easier to clean week after week.

Winter Wheel Cleaning FAQs:

How often should I clean my wheels in winter?

Ideally every 1–2 weeks, depending on mileage and conditions. If roads are heavily salted, more frequent maintenance washes help prevent build-up, staining, and corrosion.

Do I need an iron remover every wash?

No! Only use Ferrous Xtract when you notice heavy brake dust build up, or every few months as part of a deeper clean.

Can I use Ferrous Xtract as a dedicated wheel cleaner?

Yes, but it is not advisable. Ferrous Xtract is a very effective wheel cleaner, but it's primary purpose is to remove iron contamination. Using it on every wash is unnecessary and works out a lot more expensive than using Blue Lagoon which is highly dilutable.

Final Checklist: The Winter Wheel Cleaning Routine

  1. Pre-wash - Citrus
  2. Main wash - Blue Lagoon
  3. Decontaminate - Ferrous Xtract
  4. Protection - Rim-Guard
  5. Dress tyres- Tyre-Guard
  6. Optional: top up protection with Wet-Seal

Stick to this process and your wheels will stay cleaner for longer, resist winter damage, and be much easier to maintain until spring.

Squid Ink offers a Wheel Protection bundle which will save you OVER A TENNER OFF RRP! Click here to secure one now!

Please note, our Citrus is a very potent and effective cleaner. Don't use it on bare metal, highly polished, or unlacquered wheels. Always stick to pH neutral products on sensitive finishes.
